Le Refuge de Longon – Parc Mercantour

On June 22, 2007, six of us left Beuil (1,442 m) in Bruno’s van and drove over the winding Col de la Couillole (1,678 m) to the tiny old perched village of Roubion. We went through its very narrow streets and through a hole in the rock behind it which led to a one lane unpaved hillside road through woods.

L’Escapade – Beuil

On June 21, 2007, Linda and I spent the night at L’Escapade, one of the two inns in Beuil, a very old perched village an hour drive north of Nice. Beuil, at 1,500 meters, now lives on skiing in the winter and hiking and biking in the summer. Niçois have weekend houses in and around the town.

We have been coming to this fine restaurant for over twenty years. It hasn’t changed much. We were here one Christmas eve and one night we celebrated the birthday of a friend, but usually we come for lunch.

(December 24, 2006) When we ate lunch here this fall (see Below) and heard about all the crèches, we made a note on the calendar to come back and see them; and while we were at it, to eat here again.  There had been a little squib in the “Nice Matin” on Wednesday, talking about the 300 or so crèches in Luceram and mentioning that last year there had been 30,000 visitors during the month of December when they were on display.

On a warm day, there aren’t many better spots for lunch than this terrace high up in the hills behind Nice, but only a 30-minute drive with the last ten winding up to the perched village of Peillon. There are three menus, 30, 48 and 60 euros, and they change frequently.
